Myth Busting: What Supplements Do I Need to Take?

Supplements

There are countless supplements out there, vitamins and minerals promoted to us as a cure-all. However, studies have shown that many supplements are nothing more than fads and many of us are trapped in an expensive con. Here we list 5 supplements that actually can work for you.

1. OMEGA-3

We’re constantly harping on about the benefits of healthy fats in the Smurfit Nutrition Studio and we won't stop anytime soon! Omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial for heart health, important for immune functioning, brain health and the inflammatory response.

While omega-3 can be sourced naturally from spinach, salmon and walnuts, these foods aren't always available to us and this is where omega-3 supplements come in handy.

2. PROBIOTIC

Gut health is essential and probiotics help promote good digestion and help fight bad bacteria found in your intestines. Most people use probiotics to prevent diarrhea, gas, and cramping caused by medications or antibiotics,Proviotic rich foods include yoghurt and kefir but for those who don’t eat dairy products supplements can really help here.

3. VITAMIN D

A vitamin that has gained increasing attention since the COVID-19 pandemic, vitamin D has been proven to have a key role in helping the body's immune response to COVID-19. This is one supplement that is fundamental these days and we encourage everyone to try it out.

4. MULTIVITAMIN

These seem pretty obvious but they're a really handy way of packing vitamins that you’d might not be getting enough of into your diet. Multivitamins contain vitamin C, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12, A, E, D2 (or D3), K, potassium, iodine, selenium, borate, zinc, calcium, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, beta carotene, and/or iron. We certainly can't argue with that lineup!

5. GREEN POWDER

Green powders are really convenient ways of getting the amazing benefits of micronutrient rich greens, without having to consume masses of spinach. The benefits of these powders range from enhancing overall wellness, supporting immune function and helping reduce chronic disease risk. Make sure and remember that these are supplements rather than replacements and its still necessary to eat your greens!
